What these calculators reveal

Tax estimates are useful only when the year, filing status, deductions, credits, and income type are explicit. The calculators in this section use published 2026 federal thresholds and show how each result is assembled instead of hiding the tax logic behind a single number. Estimate regular federal income tax with the standard or itemized deduction, compare projected liability with withholding to see a possible refund or amount due, calculate Social Security and Medicare tax on self-employment earnings, or stack short- and long-term capital gains above ordinary taxable income. Each tool separates the pieces that are often confused: marginal rate versus effective rate, tax liability versus withholding, business profit versus Schedule SE net earnings, and ordinary income rates versus the 0%, 15%, and 20% long-term capital-gain bands. These are educational federal estimates, not tax-return preparation. They intentionally identify exclusions such as state tax, alternative minimum tax, refundable-credit eligibility, Net Investment Income Tax, special capital-gain categories, and situation-specific deductions. Use the results to understand a scenario, check withholding direction, or prepare better questions for official IRS resources or a qualified tax professional.
